One of the many advantages of having Galileo on your stallion roster is that, even if one of your main Derby hopes blots his copybook, another one is never far away.

The whispers were that Mogul, Japan's brother who was beaten in Tuesday's King Edward VII, was the anointed one from Ballydoyle in terms of the Derby. The day after his claims seemed to take a critical hit, Russian Emperor stepped up to fill the gap.

The Hampton Court as Derby trial is not possible most years, of course, but this time it played the role of the Dante and did a passable job.
