The best-laid plans went up in smoke in the first £1 million Coral-Eclipse but the outcome had a familiar feel about it all the same as the Coolmore partners came out on top thanks to Delacroix.
Dropping back from a mile and a half in the Derby, Delacroix was widely expected to make his stamina count with a forceful ride from the front but the playbook went out the window and he ended up passing all five rivals in the straight to win what has long been a stallion-making contest.
And while there were no shortage of plaudits for winning rider Ryan Moore, it was the prospect of adding a son of Darley kingpin Dubawi to the stallion ranks at Coolmore that was chief among the thoughts of winning trainer Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore's MV Magnier.
