Apprentice Aled Beech defied a damp start to the three-day Eastern Festival at the Norfolk track to bag his first double.

The 5lb claimer, who is attached to George Boughey's yard, excelled on Global Esteem in the feature 7f handicap, making all to see off the late flourish of Maxi Boy.

Beech was registering his second win in as many attempts on the 11-2 chance, who was continuing the good run of Chris Dwyer and owner Johnny Hon.

The jockey, who also won the 7f nursery on his boss's My Little Tip, said: "That's the first double of my career and I couldn't be happier.

"Thanks to Mr Dwyer for the ride and Global Esteem enjoyed himself out in front. He found a bit more when the other horse came to him."

The My Little Tip syndicate were not overdoing the celebrations despite the win of their namesake, who was backing up a victory at Salisbury on Friday when obliging easily.

Infantry on the march

David Simcock is opening his Newmarket yard to the public as part of the Henry Cecil Open Weekend on Sunday and Light Infantry could attract plenty of attention after his romp in the 6f novice stakes.

The son of Fast Company looked the part in the paddock and also in the race when coming from off the pace to outdo fellow newcomer High Velocity by six and a half lengths.

Winning jockey Jamie Spencer said: "It wasn't much of a race but he did what he had to do and that was a nice performance. Callum Shepherd has been riding him at home and he said the horse would win, so much of the credit must go to him."

Simcock added: "That was a nice performance and he was well bought by Richard Brown. We'll look for another novice after that."

Williams milestone

Stuart Williams celebrated his 50th winner of the year when Papa Stour toughed out a first win on turf in the 6f handicap under Marco Ghiani.

The 2-1 chance was previously known for his saddle slipping on his penultimate start at Lingfield.

Williams said: "He should have won that night but I tacked him up so it was my fault. We've decided he's a sprinter now and it's great to get the 50 up, especially as we have less horses."

Successful owner Tom Morley went on to land the 5f handicap when 12-1 chance Araifjan, who is trained by Robert Cowell, enjoyed conditions under Grace McEntee, who said: "Things are going great and it's nice to be getting rides for so many different trainers."
