Include some game-changers to complement the solid bonus race performers

The best punters tend to think outside the box but that is definitely not the way to approach the Tote Ten To Follow competition, where year in year out the highest-scoring lines includes the winners of the bonus races.

Consequently, I don't think you can go far wrong by including the winner of last year's Betfair Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup, A Plus Tard, and the unbeaten dual Champion Hurdle winner Honeysuckle.

Many foresee Honeysuckle losing her crown to Constitution Hill but she is miles better than all the Irish two-mile hurdlers so should clean up before coming to Cheltenham.

Constitution Hill is a more risky Ten To Follow proposition because it doesn't seem as though he is going to contest any bonus races prior to the festival. However, he looked so good last season that he has to go in too.

I can't see anything beating Allahoin the Ryanair again and, while I'm not convinced he'll love Kempton, he does have the King George on his radar too.

The brilliant Energumeneis surely a much safer option than Shishkin in the two-mile division. He looks to be on a different path to Greaneteen, who will surely be extremely hard to beat in the Tingle Creek again.

Greaneteen looked an improved horse at Exeter on his comeback run and loves Sandown. He is not as good at Cheltenham so he might be one to substitute out come March for maybe Flooring Porter, who probably won't score any points before March.

As a fully paid-up member of the L'Homme Presse fan club I can't leave out the Brown Advisory winner as I think he will relish the extra two furlongs of the Gold Cup and might be A Plus Tard's biggest threat if the ground was to come up soft.

All that is pretty obvious and those seven will no doubt be in the many lists, so there does need to be a game-changer or three in any perm and, at this stage, my suggestions would include Chantry House, who has the Coral Gold Cup as his early-season target and is a lot better than he showed last season.

He might not be Gold Cup class any more but he's an extremely strong stayer and he could end up in a National of some description come April.

Finally, I do like to include a couple of novice chasers because they can rack up some easy points before moving into Graded company. Two who might fly under the radar are Three Stripe Life, who ran a cracker behind Sir Gerhard in the Ballymore before winning the Grade 1 at Aintree, while a darker one is Flame Bearer.

The latter has moved to Willie Mullins and, if he can learn to settle better, he could make up into an Arkle candidate.
