US Open women's singles preview

Iga Swiatek has leapfrogged Aryna Sabalenka in the outright betting in the wake of the Pole's triumphs at Wimbledon in July and in Cincinnati in mid-August.

However, going in under the radar could aid the top seed's chance of retaining the US Open title in the coming fortnight in New York.

Sabalenka set for back-to-back US successes

Sabalenka is an extraordinary battler but sometimes the pressure is too much to bear for the world number one.

However, while losing to Elena Rybakina in Cincinnati recently wasn't ideal preparation for the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the season at Flushing Meadows, the extra rest may help Sabalenka, who is without a major title this year despite reaching the final of the Australian and French Opens.

Add to the mix the fact Rybakina, while immensely talented, is essentially an inconsistent performer who seldom plays two tournaments the same and it would be wrong to overlook Sabalenka's chance of repeating strictly on one poor performance.

The confidence Swiatek will have accrued from winning Wimbledon, the Slam many thought she might have most trouble going all the way in, is huge. And it's no surprise that Swiatek has kicked on since.

But there's also an argument that says the Polish former world number one has bounced back to winning form at a time when many of her big-name rivals are below their peak. And let's not forget that Swiatek had won only one fast-court major prior to her All England Club cakewalk.

Sabalenka may well find either Rybakina or Britain's Emma Raducanu a tough opponent should she meet either player in the last eight in the Big Apple.

But she can meet only one of that pair, which is a bonus given that her meetings with the duo this year have largely been competitive.

It's difficult to know exactly how far along the road back to greatness Raducanu has travelled.

The 2021 US Open heroine is definitely capable of adding to her Slam CV, but ,despite threatening to go late into the second week in other majors, punters should remember that she has gone all the way in a big-four tournament only once.

Resurgent Osaka catches the eye in the Big Apple

Anyone considering other interests on the USA Slam can consider Naomi Osaka.

The dual Flushing Meadows champion – the Japanese ace won there in 2018 and 2020 – may finally be back near her best, judging by her run to the final in Montreal, where she was undone in the final by 200-1 Canadian Victoria Mboko.

And if Osaka is back to her physical and mental best, then the rest should look out, even 2023 NYC winner Coco Gauff who looks sure to win more homeland majors in the coming years.

Belinda Bencic was hammered by Swiatek in the last four of Wimbledon this year but the Swiss 28-year-old may be better suited by the more reliable bounce at Flushing, where she made the semis in 2019.
