Naomi Osaka vs Amanda Anisimova prediction

Amanda Anisimova has been spurred on by the pain of her 6-0 6-0 demolition at the hands of Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon final in July and she got her revenge over the Polish world number two in a straight-sets victory in the US Open quarter-final.

That is testament to the mental strength and character of Anisimova, who could have easily faded into the distance following such a humiliating defeat in what has been the biggest match of her career so far.

Next up for the American is a semi-final showdown with the resurgent Naomi Osaka, another player who has battled through tough times in her bid to return to the top.

The Japanese superstar claimed four Grand Slam titles, including two at the US Open, between 2018 and 2021. However, injuries, mental struggles and not playing for 14 months as she became a mum for the first time in July 2023 has meant a long road to recovery for the former world number one.

But Osaka finished runner-up to Victoria Mboko in Montreal in August to suggest that she could be a lively outsider in New York. And her US Open victories over Daria Kasatkina, Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova have her very much back in the big time.

Anisimova leads their personal series 3-0 but that may count for little given that they last clashed in 2022 when Osaka was struggling, and the American may find it tough to emulate the level that she produced against Swiatek given what that match-up would have meant to her.

Since hiring Polish coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, who is best known for guiding Swiatek to four majors in three years, Osaka has thrived and winning 11 of her last 12 hard-court matches should ensure that her confidence levels are flowing.

This promises to be an epic battle in front of a full house and while Anisimova is the home player Osaka is a Californian resident and the two-time champion gets strong support from the US crowd.

Therefore, that is unlikely to be a factor, and Osaka’s extra experience in high-pressure situations could count for plenty.
