Aryna Sabalenka vs Amanda Anisimova preview

Aryna Sabalenka, the Racing Post's headline recommendation to retain her US Open title this year, has made it safely through to the final.

But this could be one of those rare occasions when punters who have already taken the advice to back Sabalenka may be wise to switch allegiance and get with her opponent Amanda Anisimova in the final.

Sabalenka has done little wrong in the past fortnight in New York City. The world number one may not be at her absolute peak but she has battled admirably and remains in the tournament when ante-post favourite, Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek, has already bitten the dust, having lost out to her All England Club final victim Anisimova in the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.

Sabalenka is not opposed lightly in Saturday's title match but Anisimova has won six of the pair's nine previous meetings and two of their previous three hard-court encounters. She also came out better in their only previous hard-court clash in North America.

Anisimova has so much to prove to her home supporters after being on the end of a 6-0 6-0 Wimbledon final loss to Swiatek. She has already avenged that loss – if it can ever truly be avenged – when dismissing Swiatek 6-4 6-3 in the last eight in New York. And she then went on to defeat a rival in four-time Grand Slam singles champion Naomi Osaka who is close to being back to her imperious best.

Sabalenka herself did a fine job of fighting back from a set down to end Jessica Pegula's interest in this year's tournament at the last-four stage, especially given that last year's runner-up looked to have the bit between her teeth.

But Anisimova has long possessed significantly more natural talent than Pegula and the New Jersey native, who was a top-notch teenager before her father-coach died in 2019, could now be the real deal.

It took Anisimova quite a while to find her range in the first set of her semi-final against Osaka, but she showed mental toughness to prevail after losing the opening set via a tiebreak. There may be even more nerves in her second major final appearance after the horror of her first on the London grass in July. But Sabalenka is not really a bludgeoning front-runner in the way Swiatek can be, so Anisimova should get time to work up a head of steam in this title match.

Anisimova ended up hitting 50 winners on the way to dismissing Osaka in three sets and Sabalenka may struggle to match that sort of quality hitting.
