Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz preview
Here we go again. For the third straight Grand Slam world number one Jannik Sinner and fierce rival Carlos Alcaraz battle it out for title honours as the gulf between them and the rest becomes more glaring by the tournament.
Alcaraz reigned supreme at the French Open, coming from two sets down to silence Sinner in an epic five-setter, before the Italian got his revenge with a four-set triumph at Wimbledon and the trilogy is set to be complete in New York.
The US Open will be the eighth straight Grand Slam to be won by one of these players, but there is more than just the title and pride at stake at Flushing Meadows as the victor will also finish the tournament as world number one.
However, there has been a focus to Alcaraz that we don’t always see throughout a competition, as lulls and lapses in concentration have become a regular theme for him in the early rounds of Majors, and he looks primed to upstage the defending US Open champion.
The Spaniard leads their head-to-head series 10-5, and in the most recent of those he went 5-0 up in the opening set of their Cincinnati final last month before Sinner was forced to retire, citing illness on court.
Six of their eight hard-court meetings have gone Alcaraz’s way and the world number two may be in a healthier position than Sinner, who required a medical timeout during his semi-final victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The Italian made a blistering start, taking the first set 6-1, before an injury seemingly hindered him as Auger-Aliassime hit back to take the second.
Sinner regained composure to run out a four-set victor but he never really hit top form while he also showed an air of vulnerability in round three as Denis Shapovalov’s aggressive play rewarded him with the opening set.
It is possible that the virus that Sinner was hit by in Cincinnati has left him less prepared than ideal for a monumental battle and Alcaraz, having lost only one of his 36 matches since April, can capitalise.
The Spaniard, bidding to win his sixth Grand Slam title and move two Majors ahead of Sinner, eased past Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the semi-final which made it six consecutive 3-0 wins in New York.
Djokovic forced only one break-point opportunity and the 22-year-old, having been broken only twice throughout the tournament, is not letting up much on serve so the layers may be wrong in rating Sinner clear favourite.
