Quotes of 1-40 suggest that this should be a stroll in the park for defending champion Jannik Sinner as he bids to reach his fifth straight Grand Slam final, but Felix Auger-Aliassime’s efforts in New York have been impressive and he can serve up a challenge to the world number one.

Sinner has won four of his five US Open matches in straight sets, which includes against the in-form Alexander Bublik and his reliable compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in the last two rounds.

However, the Italian top seed was given a stern test from Denis Shapovalov in round three, having lost the opening set, and Auger-Aliassime is another Canadian player with the power and aggression to put up a fight.

Big things were expected from Auger-Aliassime once he made the US Open semi-final in 2021 and, while the 25-year-old’s progression has stalled, he is a seven-time winner on the ATP Tour and time is still on his side.

Either way, few can deny what the world number 27 has achieved in the final Major of the season in New York as he has claimed seeded scalps in Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev and Alex De Minaur and he has been serving superbly.

Sinner eased past Auger-Aliassime 6-0 6-2 in the quarter-final in Cincinnati last month but the Canadian’s strong book of victims at Flushing Meadows should have installed confidence and had won their previous two meetings, albeit back in 2022.

So the defending champion, having lost only four of his 40 matches this season, should have enough in reserve to set up another Grand Slam title decider, but his opponent is playing well enough to keep matters respectable.
