US Open men's singles preview
It has become a costly exercise taking on the world’s top two Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in Grand Slam competition, with the pair having shared the last seven Major titles between them and duelled in this season’s finals at the French Open and at Wimbledon.
Alcaraz had Sinner’s measure in a five-set epic at Roland Garros before the Italian got his revenge at the All England Club, and they also recently renewed their rivalry in the Cincinnati Masters final to further highlight their dominance.
Alcaraz came out on top after Sinner was forced to retire with illness when trailing 5-0 in the opening set last time out in Cincinnati, but a shock second-round exit to Botic van de Zandschulp last season shows that the Spaniard can sometimes be tested in the early exchanges.
Providing Sinner is at full health then he is the right favourite having won the last three hard-court Grand Slam titles - two in Australia and in New York last season - and he has the luxury of avoiding Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton in his half of the draw.
Zverev could finally realise Grand Slam dream
However, Sinner still has some dangers lurking in the top half if he is undercooked with British number one Jack Draper and German world number four Alexander Zverev having plenty in their favour.
Sinner and Alcaraz could easily meet in the final of a Grand Slam for the third straight time but it 14-1 bar the irresistible duo and things are not always so straightforward at the US Open on the back of a long, gruelling season.
In the last five years at Flushing Meadows, Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem and Alcaraz have all made their Grand Slam breakthrough and the fact that Djokovic has won only four of his 24 Major titles in New York shows the demands.
The biggest threat to Sinner and Alcaraz could stem from Zverev, who looks well berthed in the second quarter with his toughest tests likely to be Alex De Minaur, Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov.
But it would be a big disappointment if the German, who is a three-time Grand Slam runner-up including to Sinner in Australia in January, couldn’t at least make the semi-final.
It may just be that a Grand Slam forever evades Zverev but he has made at least the quarter-final on his last four trips to Flushing Meadows, which includes a runner-up effort to Thiem in 2020.
Semi-final appearances in Toronto and Cincinnati, where his challenge was weakened by a virus, show he is back in peak form after an underwhelming Wimbledon and he continues to put himself in a position to contend.
Zverev leads his hard-court personal series with Alcaraz 5-3 and he is 4-3 up against Sinner, having won both US Open meetings with the Italian, so he can clearly deliver on the big stage when called upon.

Fritz value to end long wait for US champion
Having finished runner-up to Sinner last season, home favourite Fritz could be overpriced to go one place better given the army of support he is likely to receive.
The American is one of the biggest and most efficient servers on the ATP Tour and he has become extremely consistent, which has enabled him to rise up to fourth in the world rankings.
A semi-final run at Wimbledon hinted that it may not be long before the American ace again contends for Major silverware and he looks the player to beat in the third quarter, especially with the powers of 38-year-old Djokovic clearly on the wane.
