Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace preview

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are two of the Premier League’s European representatives this season but the pair may struggle to showcase their attacking talents at Villa Park.

The Villans will compete in this season’s Europa League while it will be Conference League football for Palace after they edged past Norwegian side Fredrikstad 1-0 on aggregate on Thursday.

Oliver Glasner’s visitors have had plenty to celebrate in recent meetings with Villa, having gone five matches unbeaten which includes a 4-1 rout at Selhurst Park in February before an equally convincing 3-0 victory in their FA Cup semi-final showdown in April.

However, star man Eberechi Eze has since left for boyhood club Arsenal and the three-day turnaround from a trip to Norway is sure to have its effects on a small squad also weakened in attack by an injury to Eddie Nketiah.

Palace remain a well-oiled machine under Glasner and they have kept three clean sheets in four outings, which includes a 0-0 draw in their Premier League opener at Chelsea.

However, the Eagles have also scored only twice in those four outings, having also been held in a goalless game at Fredrikstad on Thursday, and Eze’s departure takes away the brunt of their creativity.

The same problems have occurred at Aston Villa, whose transfer activities have been limited by the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.

A lack of squad depth and reliable attacking options has been evident in Villa’s opening two matches, and they registered only three shots in a goalless draw with Newcastle before last weekend’s limp 1-0 defeat at Brentford.

Unai Emery’s side huffed and puffed against the Bees but still managed only two shots on target and they are unlikely to get much change from a Palace defence who have kept eight clean sheets in their last 14 away league games.

Tielemans may have his discipline tested

An injury to Boubacar Kamara may mean that Youri Tielemans has to adopt a more defensive midfield role and, having committed five fouls in his opening two games, that makes him a leading card candidate.

Defences expected to dominate

Villa still await their first league goal of the season while Palace’s last four competitive matches have featured a total of only three goals, suggesting that this could be a cagey contest.

Palace’s last two away games at Fredrikstad and Chelsea have ended goalless, which was also the case in Villa’s opener at home to Newcastle.
