Liverpool vs Arsenal preview
It is a touch premature to describe Liverpool's Premier League clash with Arsenal as a potential title decider given that the match takes place on the final day of August.
We're not even sure who will be the Reds' first-choice striker this season as their pursuit of Newcastle's Alexander Isak drags on into the final 48 hours of the transfer window.
But Isak's Sweden teammate Viktor Gyokeres scored his first two goals for Arsenal in last weekend's 5-0 rout of Leeds and the Gunners' new-look attack can trouble the champions' defence.
Gyokeres could be joined in the front six by fellow summer signings Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Martin Zubimendi and that exciting combination should get the Gunners firing at Anfield.
Both meetings last season ended 2-2 and the Gunners dominated their final game against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, winning 3-1 in north London in February 2024.
The title contenders both won their first two league matches, albeit in contrasting styles. Liverpool, who lost the Community Shield on penalties to Crystal Palace after a 2-2 draw, needed two late goals to see off Bournemouth 4-2 at Anfield on the opening night.
A 100th-minute winner from teenager Rio Ngumoha earned them an unconvincing 3-2 victory at ten-man Newcastle on Monday.
Asked about the Magpies' approach at St James' Park, Slot said: "I'm not too sure if I saw a football match. It was set-piece after set-piece."
Arsenal's dead-ball prowess may not satisfy Slot's gourmet taste either but it has been effective, powering the Gunners to three straight second-placed finishes and the Champions League semi-finals last season.
They were not at their best in an opening 1-0 win at Manchester United but turned on the style against Leeds and started the weekend as 7-4 joint-favourites with Liverpool in the title betting.
Gunners fans would usually be despondent about the prospect of going into a tough away fixture without the injured Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and, possibly, captain Martin Odegaard.
However, Eze and Gyokeres offer new dimensions to the Arsenal attack and the visitors can play their part in another high-scoring contest at Anfield.
Kerkez could collect another Anfield card
Milos Kerkez was booked on his Liverpool debut against former club Bournemouth and the left-back faces a tricky afternoon against Arsenal winger Madueke.
Kerkez may also be tested by brilliant young dribbler Max Dowman, who came off the bench against Leeds to draw a yellow card for left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson before winning an injury-time penalty.
Gyokeres primed to prove his aerial prowess
Arsenal striker Gyokeres failed to score a single header during his 54-goal campaign for Sporting last season but the Gunners' style should showcase his aerial ability far better.
The 6ft 2in forward scored a header in the pre-season friendly win over Athletic Bilbao, hitting the post with another headed effort, and he will be a big part of Arsenal's set-piece plans at Anfield.
