It doesn't have to be broke in order to benefit from a little fixing. The novice chase system was working, although not under full steam; the BHA has done well to move to amend it.

After all, novice chases and novice hurdles are arguably the most important races in the jumps canon, being the proving ground for the next generation as well as a source of considerable interest for racegoer and punter alike.

Previous tinkerings with the novice chase agenda have not quite solved the problem of small fields and frustrating shortfalls in opportunity, and perhaps these alterations may have a lasting effect.
