Punters should be wary of information overload and one set of stats could be throwing them off the winning scent

Every time you watch any sport these days you're inundated with statistics. As someone who's convinced times provide a good insight into working out how good any horse is, plenty of them make sense to me. 

However, some stats surely aren't repeatable and vary from one game or one race to the next. As such, they may be just as likely to put a punter off the scent as on to it.

The ones that have got me confused these days are the expected goals stats in football and the jumping stats that are beginning to take hold in National Hunt racing. Don't get me wrong, it's interesting stuff but I just wonder how punters are supposed to make the jumping stats pay.
