Field Of Gold sparkles as preparations for QEII move up a gear with stablemate Ombudsman also set for Champions Day

Field Of Gold did his best to brighten up a drizzly and dank morning on the Limekilns on Wednesday when his preparations for Champions Day continued on the long gallop. 

Four days after Colin Keane, Juddmonte’s retained rider, had enjoyed a spin on the round gallop on the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes contender, regular partner Luke Catton was back on board in a one-mile exercise, and the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner was nicely in command of a decent handicapper.

The Group 1 mile contest on Saturday week – which last went the way of the Gosden yard in 2018 when Roaring Lion scored – could also see the return of ex-US performer Carl Spackler, who will be having his first run for John and Thady Gosden. He looked no 66-1 chance for the QEII in a separate piece of exercise under Robert Havlin.
