Lord, she was tough. Stanerra was not so much foaled as hewn from the rock on which Moyglare Stud stands and anything less like a traditional fairytale heroine would be hard to imagine – yet fairytale it was.

The first chapters of Stanerra's life do not detain us long, which is just as well given the extent of what followed. Unraced at two, twice raced at three when with Jim Bolger, Stanerra's formative years offered no hint of the hard case she would become. Two runs in two seasons? In her ferocious prime she would manage that workload within a week.
