'An astute judge and an excellent investigative journalist' - fond recollections of John Garnsey of the Daily Express

John Garnsey, the former holder of the renowned Scout nom de plume on the racing desk at the Daily Express who died in August, placed great importance on the proficiency of his tips as well as his ability to source scoops.
A keen punter himself – particularly when in the US as part of the visiting press pack for the Breeders’ Cup – Garnsey took heed of the encouragement being given by a noted European trainer on the back stretch at Santa Anita before the 1993 edition of the fixture.
“In 1993 at Santa Anita, Andre Fabre had Arcangues running in the Classic,” recalled Jim McGrath, the BBC’s former chief racing commentator who now works in Hong Kong.
