This Curragh winner looks a Group horse in the making - so take the 12-1 for the Royal Hunt Cup

Nick Watts on the latest big-race action and the key market moves

There’s no question about the performance of the weekend. Field Of Gold was magnificent in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and it’s hard to argue with a top price of 5-4 that he now confirms himself the king of the three-year-old milers in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

John and Thady Gosden’s star swatted away Cosmic Year in convincing fashion and it’s certainly hard to imagine many punters queuing up to take the 8-1 about the runner-up claiming revenge at the royal meeting, given he has less than four weeks to find the best part of four lengths.

I have to confess to a funny feeling watching Field Of Gold and if, like me, you were on him at fancy prices for Newmarket, I think you’ll understand. You get used to disappointment in this game so I took his defeat on the chin at the time, but somehow it grates more after this conclusive proof of his brilliance. Either Ruling Court is a truly exceptional colt or was exceptionally lucky to beat him that day – we shall see as the season unfolds.
