Wow! What a weird day at the races we had at Ascot on Saturday, with two very predictable outcomes, two others that were wildly unforeseeable and, thankfully, a satisfying Champion Stakes to crown it all.

How should we interpret those crazy wins at 100-1 and 200-1? Cicero's Gift and Powerful Glory have now taken their place among the five most surprising winners in the history of top-class British Flat racing, since the Pattern was created 54 years ago.

If the going had been heavy, there would be no difficulty in digesting those results. That's what can happen on bad ground at the end of a long season, we would tell each other.
