Enhanced concussion protocols come into effect in Britain

Jockeys involved in a fall in Britain will have to pass a more comprehensive trackside screening process before being allowed to ride again under a series of enhancements to the current concussion management protocols which come into effect from Monday.

Previously jockeys had to pass a memory test following a fall but, in a bid to better protect them from riding under the influence of a concussive injury, the assessment will now also include a balance test and a concussion symptom scoresheet.

Doctors will also be given the authority to test riders a second time, approximately half an hour after the first assessment, even if the rider passed the initial screening, in case of late-onset concussion.
