The first four in the women’s sevens ante-post betting made it through to yesterday’s semi-finals and for all this sport’s capacity for shocks it would be no surprise to see a similar scenario in the men’s event which begins today.

However, whereas bookmakers had the top-seeded Australian women as clear odds-on favourites to triumph at Rio’s Deodoro Stadium they are struggling to separate the chances of 2-1 Fiji, 11-4 New Zealand and 4-1 South Africa.

Free-scoring Fiji are the top seeds after winning the last two world series and they have the easiest of the draw if they can top Pool A. That section winner plays the second-best third-placed team in the quarter-finals and then the winner of the game between the Pool B and Pool C runners-up.
