Nations being permitted to enter only one competitor in each sailing category means that the British entrant in the men’s Laser, Nick Thompson, will be fired up to make the most of his chance this time around.

Thompson missed out on a place in the London team to Paul Goodison but has won the last two world championships and will know the waters in Rio better than everyone except home hero Robert Sheidt.

Thompson has made 14 trips to the Olympic venue, sailing for 160 days, and that can’t do him any harm in what is by its nature an open category.
