The Opening Show: the best bits from Saturday's programme

The Opening Show team were at Musselburgh on Saturday and while there is plenty of racing at hand this weekend, much of the show focussed on events at Aintree in the Randox Health Grand National a week ago.

'We were making the most terrible noise'

With One For Arthur providing a rare win for Scotland, the pride for all involved was still clear to see as trainer and studio guest Lucinda Russell remained full of emotion as she recalled last Saturday's events.

While almost all of those memories will be treasured for a lifetime, Russell admitted she and fellow connections of the horse made quite a scene as their charge hit the front in the closing stages.

"We were in Ronnie Bartlett's box and he was watching from behind the glass, so he was having to be quite quiet, whereas we were inside watching it on the TV and making the most terrible noise - just being so embarrassing - I cringe about it now."

More Harvey revelations

Barry Geraghty joked on last week's show that he is still sleeping with Luke Harvey in reference to him staying over at his house when needs be and there were more revelations about Harvey's closeness with current jockeys on Saturday's show.

As Lucinda Russell was praising Derek Fox's Grand National-winning ride, Harvey said: "He's a very good kisser too because he kissed me just after he crossed the line. You didn't see that bit, it was just before the cameras were on me."

Russell pointed out that Fox already has a "very lovely girlfriend", to which Harvey replied: "Well, I wasn't trying to compete with her!"

You learn something new every day

In previewing Musselburgh's totepoolliveinfo.com Royal Mile Handicap, the team were pondering what the name of horse number 11, Somnambulist, actually meant.

A quick check with Google during a break revealed it to mean sleepwalking, hence his being owned by The Sleepwalkers.

Gordon aiming high

In a feature with last year's champion apprentice, Luke Harvey went to meet Josephine Gordon, who is embarking on her first year as a professional and has plenty of lofty ambitions remaining.

"If you take a look at the female jockeys that are riding out their claims, there are a lot more about and I think there'll be a lot more in the next few years," said Gordon. "I've said it before, I think there'll be a female champion jockey."

Harvey replied: "It could be you!"

"I hope so," said Gordon, with a smile.

Goldie after a selfie

Russell was replaced in the studio by fellow trainer Jim Goldie, who was also bursting with Scottish pride following the win of One For Arthur, who was to be paraded at Musselburgh on Saturday as part of his victory tour of Scotland.

Goldie, it turns out, is becoming something of a One For Arthur groupie having also been at Kelso when the horse was presented for racegoers in the week and is excited to see him again.

"What a week and for Lucinda to bring him along is great," said Goldie. "I saw him at Kelso - well, I had a runner at Kelso, I didn't just go to see him - and I could have got a selfie with him!"

Perhaps the trainer will get his snap on Saturday.

The trainer continued to bring the laughs and closed the show with a little joke as he looked forward to Luke Harvey sporting a kilt when he heads to Ayr for next week's Scottish Grand National meeting.

"They tell me that you can tell the clan of a Scotsman by looking below his kilt," said Goldie. "If he's got a quarter-pounder, he's a McDonald."
