Who will follow in the footsteps of Lambourn, Luxembourg and Iridessa in Killarney race with a rich recent history?

Punting pointers for some of Wednesday's meetings . . .

Bath: in-form De Sousa called up

U S S Charleston looks well poised to get off the mark in the 5½f maiden (2.50) after two promising runs at the beginning of his career.

His debut came at Doncaster, where he showed signs of greenness but grew into the race and stayed on strongly through the line. He built on that effort when finishing second as favourite at Leicester, and the progression between those two outings puts the colt poised to go one better.

Trained by Lemos De Souza, U S S Charleston was ridden by Finley Marsh on both previous starts, but Silvestre de Sousa takes over in the saddle. De Sousa has been in flying form, with five winners from his last 11 rides at a 45 per cent strike-rate.

Among the opposition is the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Faraway Tree, while Warren Greatrex saddles Dark Alley, who showed improvement on his second start when runner-up at Windsor.

Bath: Adrian Wintle 40%

The trainer is 2-5 in the last five runnings of the mile handicap (4.53). He runs Blue Hero.

Catterick: Bethell out to repeat trick

Ed Bethell won the 7f handicap (5.00) last year with Sea The Dream and the trainer has a chance of repeating the feat with Native Instinct.

The form of the three-year-old’s final juvenile start at Redcar, where he justified 6-4 favouritism last October, has worked out well. The second, Dan Tucker, has since won a maiden and been narrowly beaten in a competitive York handicap, while Maelstrom has already completed a hat-trick of wins this year.

Native Instinct has improved with his runs this season, including when third at Pontefract last month.

Bethell said: “All of my horses needed their first run, and he put up a much better effort second time out when dropped back to 6f at Pontefract, where he hit the line well. He came out of it sound and he’ll definitely build on that.”

Ffos Las: can trainer boost impressive record?

Jennie Candlish has an impressive record at the track on the Flat, with five winners from just eight runners there in that sphere, including a perfect three from three this year.

She saddles Warrior Lion in the 1m2f handicap (9.00), who is chasing a first career win. The four-year-old has shown signs of progress since joining Candlish from Anthony McCann, finishing seventh on stable debut before an improved third last time.

He remains at the same trip and drops in class, while Candlish has reapplied the cheekpieces and tongue-tie he wore when he was second off an 11lb higher mark at Dundalk last October.

Warrior Lion is owned by Candlish's partner and assistant Alan O'Keeffe, who is enjoying an excellent run with new recruits. Dickens has won his first two starts since joining the yard, while T Or Coffey also made a successful stable debut at Stratford.

Killarney: can Dial emulate top-level stars?

The mile Irish EBF Median Sires Series Race (5.50) has an illustrious honour roll, having been won by Derby and Irish Derby hero Lambourn and fellow Group 1 winners Luxembourg and Iridessa in recent years.

Dial Me In, who is trained by Joseph O’Brien, bids to maintain his unbeaten record after making a winning debut at Leopardstown when scoring by a head. He finished his race strongly and is bred to get the trip, while his rider Dylan Browne McMonagle enjoyed at double at the track on Monday.

Donnacha O'Brien saddles an intriguing newcomer in A Boy Named Susie. The son of Starspangledbanner has an entry in the National Stakes at the Curragh in September and is the mount of Gavin Ryan.

Another to catch the eye is Bellamano, trained by Johnny Murtagh. She finished fifth on her debut, but stayed on well in the final furlong and suggesting the step up to a mile will suit. Rory Mulligan takes the ride and claims 7lb.

Uttoxeter: Rouge ready to go again

Callin Baton Rouge caused a stir when winning at 18-1 at the track just over two weeks ago, running far better than the market had anticipated.

Prior to that win she was pulled up on her chasing debut and the successful return to hurdles bodes well for her to repeat that in the 2m handicap hurdle (4.08). That victory was her fourth since joining Charles and Adam Pogson's yard last year, having arrived as a maiden.

Adam Pogson said: "She won her first three for us and went up a total of 28lb and then we decided to go to Cheltenham twice. The first time she was running a hell of a race and at the second-last, she just stood off it too far and landed on top of it and winded herself. James [Bowen, jockey] said he'd definitely have been in the first three.

"We ran her again and she was over the top so we gave her a break. We wanted to bring her back to go novice handicap chasing but she just finds hurdles a lot easier, as she's not the biggest."

Yarmouth: maiden to note

There are some exciting prospects lining up in the 7f maiden (7.10), with several hoping to build on previous experience and take a step forward into the winner’s enclosure.

Chief among them is Kaleido, trained by John and Thady Gosden, who finished second on his debut followed by two solid placed efforts. The Gosden team are enjoying a strong season at Yarmouth with five winners from 13 runners, and a +£32.14 profit to a £1 level stake.

Kaleido was last seen finishing third in a competitive Class 2 contest over a mile, where he weakened late on, so the drop back to seven furlongs could be a positive move under Oisin Murphy.

Among his rivals, Archie Watson’s Arboreous brings solid all-weather form, having finished second on his last three starts. He makes his turf debut today under Hollie Doyle and will need to prove he can replicate that form on grass.
