The Ormonde Stakes is almost a programme book anomaly as it falls somewhere between a middle-distance race and a staying contest. Along with the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury in August, it is the only 1m5½f Group race in Britain open to older horses.
The roll of honour in the last decade is almost evenly split between 1m4f performers and stayers. Aidan O'Brien's three winners; Idaho, Japan and Memphis Tennessee were best over 1m4f, while 2017 victor Western Hymn thrived over 1m2f. Conversely, Morando, Dartmouth, Clever Cookie, Brown Panther and Mount Athos all excelled over further.
