Another smart Jennie Candlish prospect plus a Group 2 winner on the comeback trail - punting pointers for Saturday's action

Punting pointers from some of today's race meetings . . .

Newcastle: You could be another smart Candlish prospect

Jennie Candlish has hit the headlines with her prolific novice hurdler Skyjack Hijack recently and the trainer will unleash It's All About You in the 2m1f maiden hurdle (12.47).

Like Skyjack Hijack, It's All About You runs in the same white, red and blue silks of Alan Baxter. He also boasts some useful Flat form having won at Newbury as a juvenile before landing a double at Ayr and Ffos Las in the summer.

There is plenty of promise for a jumping career in the four-year-old's pedigree as he is by Highland Reel, who is responsible for smart hurdler Spartan Army, and out of a Montjeu mare.

Newcastle stat: a trainer it pays to follow

Backing Ben Haslam's jumps runners at the track in the last five seasons would have yielded a £33.05 profit from a £1 level-stake. He relies on Remarkable Force in the 2m1f novice hurdle (12.47).

Southwell: Iberian on the comeback trail

It has been a sharp fall from grace for Iberian, who won the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster in 2023.

He beat two Group 1 winners that day in Sunway and Rosallion, but failed to fire on his three subsequent runs. However, those efforts came in the Dewhurst Stakes (sixth of eight), 2,000 Guineas (11th of 11) and Prix Jean Prat (11th of 12).

This 6f conditions stakes (5.45) will represent a significant drop in class and it is notable connections are choosing to persist with the Lope De Vega colt. They will be hoping a wind operation can help spark a revival.

Richard Ryan, racing manager for part-owners Teme Valley, said: "He's had various setbacks this year and we're happy to put a line through his runs this year so far. Hopefully he can show his true ability as he's always shown a lot of speed at home, so the drop back to six furlongs doesn't frighten us.

“Future plans will be dictated by how Saturday goes. We're considering possibilities in Saudi Arabia, but we're also looking forward to a grass campaign here next year."

Southwell stat: Juddmonte's happy hunting ground

Juddmonte have an 80 per cent strike-rate at the track this year, with four of their five runners winning. They have one runner on the card, Pinhole in the second division of the mile novice (4.15).

Wolverhampton: fascinating Appleby stable debutant

Mick Appleby won this 6f handicap (6.00) with Starshiba last year and the Group 1-winning trainer has a fascinating runner this time around.

Appleby is represented by Cairn Gorm, who is having his first start for the yard since leaving Newmarket trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy's stable.

A winner at York in July, the chestnut was previously trained by Mick Channon, for whom he won a Group 3 as a juvenile. Cairn Gorm will carry top weight in a bid to defy a mark of 80.

Appleby's runners have been punter-friendly at Wolverhampton this year, with ten of the 97 winning and a further 27 finishing second or third. Backing all 97 to a £1 level stake would have yielded a £7.48 profit.

However, the yard's runners have struggled to score in recent weeks, with a record of 0-23 in the last fortnight prior to Friday's racing.
