Dermot Weld: Homeless Songs only 50-50 to run in 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket

Homeless Songs, as short as 5-1 second favourite for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas on Sunday, is only 50-50 to turn up at Newmarket according to Dermot Weld, who is giving serious consideration to running in the French equivalent on May 15 instead.

The Moyglare Stud-owned filly displayed an explosive turn of foot to land the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown earlier this month, a performance that saw her price plummet for the first fillies' Classic of the campaign at Newmarket. She had been 66-1 with some firms.

While Weld left Homeless Songs in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas at Monday's forfeit stage, the legendary trainer will make a decision later this week as to whether she will show up at Newmarket or instead wait a fortnight for the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp.

Weld told the Racing Post: "Homeless Songs will be left in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, but the French Guineas is under strong consideration and I would like to make punters aware of that. I would say it is 50-50 where she will go.

"She's in very good form and has come out of her Leopardstown race very well. I'll make a final decision on Wednesday, or Thursday at the latest."

The news that Homeless Songs is not a certain starter on Saturday comes 24 hours after John Gosden ruled ante-post favourite Inspiral out of the race.

Gosden revealed that Inspiral, last year's unbeaten champion two-year-old filly, would not be confirmed on Monday for the first fillies' Classic following discussions with Richardson and Cheveley Park owner Patricia Thompson.

"Having consulted Mrs Thompson and Chris Richardson, a decision has been made not to run Inspiral in the 1,000 Guineas," said Gosden, who trains along with son Thady.

"She missed some days training at a critical stage of her preparation and although she is well in herself now, we don't have her at the correct pitch to run in the Guineas. The focus now will be on the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, with probably a run beforehand."

Tenebrism is the new favourite for Sunday's contest, as Aidan O'Brien chases a fourth win in a row in the race and an eight victory in all.
