Clive Cox eyes Commonwealth Cup redemption for Supremacy after Ascot flop
Supremacy, Britain's best juvenile last year and the highest-rated two-year-old Clive Cox has ever had, remains on course for Royal Ascot and the Commonwealth Cup despite his disappointing performance at the Berkshire track in April.
Owned by Jason Goddard, Supremacy won the Middle Park in brilliant style last year and headed the betting for the Commonwealth Cup, which Cox landed with Golden Horde 12 months ago.
However, the son of Mehmas was last of eight in Ascot's Pavilion Stakes five weeks ago and is 12-1 with Betfair and Paddy Power for the six-furlong Group 1, in which the yard could also run the progressive Diligent Harry.
Watch Supremacy win the Middle Park
Cox said: "Supremacy was just coming to himself before Ascot and then there was some rain on the day, but for whatever reason he was below par. He came home with a raised white cell figure, so there was something amiss without a doubt.
"We weren't aware of it before and his tests before the race were fine."
The Lambourn trainer still believes in his stable star and added: "I really hope we can be back and come through the next few weeks and be in top form for the Commonwealth Cup.
"I wish Ascot hadn't happened, but it did. He's a very good horse and we've been pleased with him for the last few weeks and I hope we continue to see that.
"There was not a lot of benefit from that run and because of the figures we were reading we were quiet with him for a bit, but I've been happy with him since and hope that can be borne out on the racetrack."
Campanelle, last year's Queen Mary winner, heads the Commonwealth Cup betting for US trainer Wesley Ward.
