Mark Johnston is only the fifth person in well over a century to hold the record as the most prolific winning trainer of all time in Britain.

The record has passed in turn from 19th-century National Hunt giant Arthur Yates to Arthur Stephenson (1992), Martin Pipe (2000), Richard Hannon snr (2013) and now Johnston, who is in his 32nd year as a trainer.

The record is for career wins in Britain, Flat and jumps combined. It therefore includes the Middleham-based Scotsman's five wins over jumps, among them the 1997 Fighting Fifth Hurdle with Star Rage, but not his many wins abroad, notably two Irish Classics.
