'He was always the same cheery guy whenever you met him' - Ron Hyett remembered after his death at 73

Ron Hyett, who has died at the age of 73, rode for most of his career as a freelance jockey but was closely associated with the Worcestershire yard of Katie Gaze and Henry Oliver, responsible for his pair of 1972 Cheltenham Festival winners. 

Known initially as the Aldsworth Hurdle, what is now run as the Turners Novices’ Hurdle was in only its second year when Hyett drove Even Dawn up the Cheltenham hill to win at 40-1.

All the more remarkable for a yard with only 12 horses, Hyett and the Caradoc Court team also landed the County Hurdle that year with 15-1 chance Cold Day.
