Juddmonte's gallant greys didn't get the rub of the green in Saturday's major races - but brighter days lie ahead

Somewhere out there is a parallel world in which Juddmonte, rather than Godolphin, was the ownership giant that enjoyed a huge weekend, winning major races on either side of the Atlantic with a couple of classy greys. As it is, there's some wound-licking to be done, but Field Of Gold and Final Gambit both seem sure to make their impact on the season ahead.
Field Of Gold was free through the early stages of Saturday's 2,000 Guineas and Kieran Shoemark's focus was on getting him settled, while William Buick was happy to let Ruling Court stride forward into a position one length ahead of his rival. That cheap length was one of two notable things that helped the winner, the other being the handful of seconds it took Field Of Gold to respond when asked for everything at the two pole.
The fact that Field Of Gold produced a sustained, strong run, so that he was going past in the strides immediately after the line, meant that Shoemark was bound to be taking some flak again. Anyway, there will be other days and perhaps punters will eventually take a more indulgent view of this ride if it becomes clear that Field Of Gold really needs a mile and a quarter.
