Canadian Grand Prix predictions

The Canadian Grand Prix is set up to make for absolute box-office viewing but it's a really trappy betting heat for punters.

Mercedes' George Russell drove a brilliant final qualifying lap to take pole position and land a fantastic 5-1 winner for Racing Post Sport's Adam Scriven.

The Briton was also on pole for this race last season but could manage only third in the race and he again looks vulnerable with some major dangers right behind him.

World champion Max Verstappen is alongside him on the front row and has showed good speed all weekend. He has had several run-ins with Russell and while being one penalty point away from a race suspension should lead him to err on the side of caution, that's just not his style and sparks could fly in the first couple of corners.

The Red Bull star may just prove the best bet for the race as he has been the man to step in whenever McLaren have faltered this season, winning at Suzuka and Imola. The British team have not been at their best this weekend but they retain the potential to shine in the race, with Oscar Piastri a real threat from third on the grid.

His teammate Lando Norris threw away his chance of pole in Q3 yet again. Having been fastest in Q1 and whisker behind Russell in Q2, he missed the final chicane on a quick first run then hit the wall on his second attempt. A strong recovery drive is likely, but he could lose too much early ground from seventh on the grid to challenge for victory.
