Canadian Grand Prix qualifying predictions

For only the second time this year, McLaren failed to set the fastest time in either Friday practice session, and qualifying is looking a pretty open affair at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

World champion Max Verstappen set the pace in the first practice for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix before George Russell took over in the later session.

McLaren, who are on course to wrap up the Constructors' Championship in record time, were on the premises with Lando Norris just 0.028 seconds off the pace, but the Briton described it as the team's worst Friday of the year.

His teammate, drivers' championship leader Oscar Piastri, was curiously off the pace, but the team were assessing some new parts and the Australian cannot be counted out.

However, McLaren have generally been quicker in race trim than over a single lap and the pole position market-leaders could be worth taking on.

Mercedes have looked less competitive recently after Russell recorded podium finishes in four of the first six races, but the Montreal circuit may play to their strengths and the King's Lynn racer was on pole there last year.

Russell has put in some impressive performances in qualifying this season, starting in the top three four times, and he is worth a small bet at the prices to claim his sixth career pole position.

Charles Leclerc could be a threat but after what the Ferrari driver described as a "very stupid" crash in first practice, he missed the second session and lost valuable development time.
