Steve Palmer's Sanderson Farms Championship preview

Top tip

Michael Thorbjornsen 22-1

Rising star Michael Thorbjornsen is the sort of player that Team USA will probably be turning to in the years to come, as they bid to end their poor Ryder Cup record, and the 24-year-old powerhouse can further advertise his credentials in this week's Sanderson Farms.

Thorbjornsen was a magnificent amateur, who finished fourth in the 2022 Travelers Championship, and he has twice finished second on the PGA Tour as a professional. He opened with a 63 and finished eighth on his Sanderson Farms debut last year.

The Ohio-born starlet was 13th in the Procore Championship last time out, a high-class event which featured ten of the American Ryder Cup side. Thorbjornsen, with world-class caddie JJ Jakovac by his side, appears ready to make a PGA Tour breakthrough.

Next best bet

Davis Thompson 22-1

Min Woo Lee is a tempting option after some bright DP World Tour form, but the Aussie is making his Jackson debut, so preference is for Davis Thompson as he makes his fourth Sanderson Farms appearance. Thompson can hit the ground running and threaten a second PGA Tour title.

Thompson won on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2022, then shed his PGA Tour maiden tag with a four-shot romp in last year's John Deere Classic. A cold putter has been holding him back this summer, but his last two spins were encouraging, with 11th place in the Wyndham Championship followed by 19th in that high-class Procore event.

Other selections

Beau Hossler 45-1
Ricky Castillo 60-1
Hayden Springer 80-1

Sanderson Farms form figures of 10-57-28-2 show how much Beau Hossler likes the Jackson layout and he lost a playoff to Kevin Yu last year. Hossler was the best college player in America about a decade ago, so turning 30 in March as a PGA Tour maiden was disappointing, but he has been runner-up four times and still has time on his side.

Four top-15 finishes in his last six tournaments means Hossler has headed to a venue he likes with some confidence. He was fourth in the Barracuda Championship in July.

Ricky Castillo, world number one amateur for a month in 2020, is a promising 24-year-old trying to cement his PGA Tour status. He won on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023 and has played some great golf on the main circuit this year, including fifth spot in the Byron Nelson. With an ability to churn out greens in regulation, Castillo seems a good value Jackson debutant.

Complete the staking plan with 28-year-old maiden Hayden Springer, who won twice on the Canadian Tour in 2023 before claiming PGA Tour status at Q School. He has posted five top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour, including eighth place on his Sanderson Farms debut last year, despite going into that event after two missed cuts.
