Steve Palmer's KLM Open preview
Laurie Canter is by far the highest-ranked player in the KLM Open field but the Englishman has returned from a humbling trip to America in which he missed three consecutive cuts. This is obviously a huge downgrade for Canter, but those Stateside misadventures have probably dented his confidence.
Thriston Lawrence took advantage of a similar drop in grade when finishing fourth in the Soudal Open on his DP World Tour return, following six missed cuts in a row on the PGA Tour. Canter and Lawrence must be respected but others are preferred.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen 16-1
Danish youngster Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen looks ready to make his DPWT breakthrough this week. He won three times on the Challenge Tour last year and has quickly established himself as one of the finest talents in the higher grade.
A Friday 69 meant missing the cut on the mark in last year's KLM Open and Neergaard-Petersen has become a regular title contender in the 12 months since, finishing fourth in the Dunhill Links, runner-up in the Qatar Masters, runner-up in the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour and fourth in the Hainan Classic.
RNP has excelled in strong fields, finishing tenth in the Dubai Desert Classic and 22nd in the Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour, and he won a US Open qualifier in Dallas the day after the US PGA.
This elite ball-striker was slow out of the traps on his return to Europe in Austria last week – he missed the cut by a shot despite a second-round 68 – but that weekend breather just adds to his hopes of KLM glory.
Next best bet
Joost Luiten 22-1
Home hero Joost Luiten may complete a KLM hat-trick on Sunday. He will probably be particularly motivated for this edition, having been controversially denied a chance to represent the Netherlands in the Olympics last year.
Luiten finished second in the 2007 KLM Open, sixth in 2011, was victorious in 2013 and 2016, before tenth place at The International in 2019 and 15th spot there 12 months ago. This year the six-time DPWT champion has already posted six top-20s, finishing third in India and fifth in Turkey.
Like Neergaard-Petersen, Luiten missed the cut by a shot in Austria despite a strong Friday round of 67, so focus could quickly turn to his favourite event of the season.
Other selections
Guido Migliozzi 55-1
Marcus Kinhult 80-1
Rafa Cabrera Bello 250-1
The defending champion has been in bright form in recent weeks, following 17th place in Turkey with second spot in the US Open qualifier at Walton Heath, then three good rounds from four in the Soudal Open.
Migliozzi, who won the French Open in a similar assignment at Le Golf National, has successfully defended a title on the Alps Tour in the past and should threaten a fifth DPWT triumph on Sunday.
Complete the staking plan with two big-priced outsiders. Marcus Kinhult, 15th in the China Open in April and 12th in Turkey last month, finished 37th in Austria on Sunday. The Swede was a playoff loser at The International last year, having entered the event as a badly out of form world number 532. He fell in love with the course on his debut, carded four rounds in the 60s, and can be a factor again.
Rafa Cabrera Bello, a former world number 16 who has played for Europe in the Ryder Cup and won four times on the DPWT, is also worth considering. There were big gaps between those four titles – one of which was a Rolex Series event – and he seems to be knuckling down again at the age of 41 after almost four years outside the winner's enclosure.
Cabrera Bello has made five cuts in a row and carded weekend rounds of 67 and 68 for 22nd place in Austria last week. A breezy, linksy KLM venue seems an ideal place to continue this resurgence. Last year was a virtual write-off for RCB, but he finished 29th on his International debut, closing with three rounds of 70. The Gran Canaria man is brilliant in the wind, winning in Dubai and Scotland, and finishing fourth in an Open. He has also finished fourth at Le Golf National.

- Course type Parkland
- Course overview The International has hosted the KLM Open twice before – the 2019 edition was won by Sergio Garcia, then Guido Migliozzi triumphed last year. The only significant change between those renewals was at the 11th hole, which used to be a 322-yard par-four, but was changed to a 127-yard par-three last year. Garcia won with an 18-under-par total on the par 72 layout, beating Nicolai Hojgaard by a shot. Ian Woosnam, working with Bruno Steensels, was the course architect. This links-like layout, with undulating fairways, works through dunes and swales. There are water hazards to punish the errant. The greens are large and full of humps and hollows
- Story of last year Guido Migliozzi won a three-man playoff, making birdie at the second playoff hole to defeat Marcus Kinhult and Joe Dean
- Weather forecast A mixture of sunny intervals, cloud and light rain for all four days, with moderate breezes throughout
- Type of player suited to the challenge This is a test of accuracy and strategy rather than power and players need to plot their way along one of the most undulating courses on the schedule, which will be windswept all week
- Key attribute Accuracy
