Arsenal vs Chelsea predictions

Mikel Arteta's abrupt exit from his post-match interview after last weekend's 1-1 draw with Manchester United tells you all you need to know about Arsenal's recent results in the Premier League.

Reluctant to concede defeat in the title race, even though his side trail Liverpool by 15 points, Arteta was understandably frustrated by the performance at Old Trafford.

And punters should not rush to back the Gunners to bounce back against Chelsea at the Emirates on Sunday.

The consequences of not adding to their attacking armoury in January were once again laid bare for Arsenal, who dominated the first half against United but went in 1-0 down at the break after their incorrectly positioned wall allowed Bruno Fernandes to fire home from a free-kick.

Declan Rice ensured the Gunners avoided the embarrassment of a defeat but once again Arsenal were found wanting up front without Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Rotation was inevitable for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with PSV given that Arsenal won 7-1 in Eindhoven the previous week. But a front three featuring left-back Kieran Tierney, defensive midfielder Mikel Merino and struggling forward Raheem Sterling nonetheless offered little cutting edge and demonstrated Arteta's lack of options up front.

Loanee Sterling at least looked a little brighter in midweek but he is ineligible to face his parent club on Sunday and it is hard to see where the goals are going to come from for the Gunners, who are winless in their last three Premier League fixtures and have to be careful not to relinquish their place in the top four.

Chelsea are one of the clubs pushing for Champions League qualification and they have won their last four matches in all competitions, albeit against weak opposition in FC Copenhagen twice and relegation-threatened pair Leicester and Southampton.

Despite the lack of quality from their opponents, Chelsea could only grind out 1-0 wins in their last two matches and Enzo Maresca will also be concerned about his side's attacking threat.

Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu and Noni Madueke are missing for the Blues and a high-scoring battle seems unlikely in north London, especially with both squads potentially a touch drained by their European commitments.

The EFL Cup final is the star of the show on Sunday and it is unlikely that this London derby will steal its thunder.
