The Racecourse Prices Index: how much for food and drink at Wolverhampton?

The Racecourse Prices Index (RPI) is an occasional series, in which we report from each of Britain and Ireland's racetracks on the cost of going racing.

Racecourse report: entry, food and pint prices from Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton

Date visited: Sunday, December 18, 2022

Was it a big day?

No. A £20,000 Class 2 handicap was the most valuable contest on the eight-race card. It was the only meeting of the weekend in Britain to go ahead but clashed with the World Cup final between Argentina and France.

How much was entry on the gate?

£19.50 for adults, with a £5 discount if part of the Racegoers Club. Kids went free for the meeting marketed as the Festive Family Fun Day.

Other than restaurants/hospitality, what were the food and beverage options?

Award-winning sausage rolls and pies were available from the Piglet's Pantry booth, with the standard racecourse fare of beef, cheese and chicken burgers and fries also served at the same kiosk.

Donna Italia pepperoni and margherita pizzas were an alternative option. By far the most popular draw though was the well-stocked sweet stall, with most parents obliging on their children's wishes to stock up on pick n mix.

What's the damage?

Bottle of water: £2.50
Cheapest pint:
£5.60 (Carlsberg)
Guinness:
£6.20
Champagne:
No champagne or prosecco available
Burger: £7.50 (served with fries)

All drink prices taken from the main racecourse bar, or where there are multiple bars, one chosen at random.

What was the cheeseburger like?

Not awful but not the best I've had at a racecourse either. It did the job, but the meat had me reminiscing about old school dinners. The bun, lettuce, cheese and tomato somewhat counteracted the slightly bland-tasting burger. The chips, on the other hand, were great.

And the queues?

The queues around the bars were okay, but there was a five to ten-minute wait for people to get their burgers, chips and pizzas.

What did the punters say?

I come here a lot because it's cheap and I like a bet. The chips are nice, although my dad thinks the food at Uttoxeter is better.
