It's Second Thought versus Sutter County round three

William Haggas took the inaugural running of this race with Ertijaal, who went on to prove himself an exceptional talent over 5f in Dubai, and he has a good chance of taking it again with Second Thought.

Both horses ran only twice as a two-year-old, Second Thought missed the core of the season after a highly promising debut second at Salisbury in May and, like Ertijaal, he arrives here on the back of a narrow Listed success in the Spring Cup.

Second Thought meets Sutter County for a third time, and while he has come out on top on both previous occasions, there has not been a lot in it and this furlong-shorter trip is more likely to favour the runner-up.

The pair stand out on ratings, although Tomily, who needed the race when beaten by them both at Kempton in February, and the filly Dubai One are not out of it.

New trip

This is the race's first running over 6f. The inaugural running was over 7f and at the two subsequent Championships, there were separate races for three-year-olds over 5f and a mile.

Rare bookings

Robert Winston has ridden for William Haggas only seven times in the last five seasons, including scoring twice on Second Thought. Ryan Moore is four from eight for Saeed Bin Suroor. He is Dubai One's seventh different rider in eight starts.

He's in great form and has done it very well. Having missed his two-year-old season through injury this was always the plan, and he's ready to go. He's dropping back to 6f again, but he's won over the trip and there's bags of speed in his pedigree so we hope we can get away with it.

Second Thought has beaten him fair and square probably on two occasions, but there hasn't been a huge amount between us. There was a split second when we thought we might have him in trouble over 7f at Lingfield last time, and the drop to six might help. We'll be positive from stall 1.

The track suits him and this has been the plan for a long while. When he took on Second Thought and Sutter County in his first run on the all-weather he needed the race badly and next time he beat Sutter County. Last time he ran well in a handicap giving away a lot of weight. He's a tough horse and will have a good chance.
