Emit relished the step up to a mile and a half to land his first stakes success in the Listed Marble City Stakes.

He found an extra gear late on to deny Sharpen by half a length and form the middle leg of a 29-1 treble for jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle, which enabled him to take the lead in the Irish jockeys' championship.

The impressive Tipperary maiden winner in October for Joseph O'Brien was unlucky not to land Group 3 honours at the Curragh in May when third past the post and subsequently promoted to second after suffering interference at a crucial juncture.

After finishing down the field at Royal Ascot in the Hampton Court last month, he bounced back on his first effort over a mile and a half, battling back having been headed by the eventual runner-up at the furlong pole.

The winner went off a well-supported 15-8 shot, with 6-4 favourite Acapulco Bay finishing a further length and three-quarters away in third.

A further step up in trip could be on the agenda for the son of Too Darn Hot and O'Brien said: "He was game and tough and he's always been resilient. He was unlucky at the Curragh where he came out the worst of it. Ascot didn’t really go to plan for us and we were happy to put a line through that after the way the race set up.

"We decided we’d come here up in trip and he seemed to really enjoy the extra distance. He fought really well. Dylan said he’d even go a mile and six."

The duo were also on target in the opening 7f maiden with newcomer Alibah, who powered home to deny Sanctijude by three-quarters of a length at 13-2.

McMonagle finished off the card by guiding 2-5 favourite Crypto Force to a straightforward two-length victory in the closing 1m1½f conditions race for Adrian Murray, bringing his season's tally to 52, two ahead of nearest pursuer Colin Keane in the race for the jockeys' title.

Continuite looks smart

The Ger Lyons team also landed a double and Continuite looks a smart prospect after winning the mile fillies' maiden with any amount in hand, scoring at her ease by four and a quarter lengths to justify 8-11 favouritism under Gary Carroll.

The Frankel filly was getting off the mark at the third attempt having been denied by a head over course and distance in September and carries the heavy tag of teacher's pet in the stable.

"She happens to live right behind my bedroom and for some reason that’s the kiss of death to most horses when they say it's one of the boss's favourites!," said Lyons. "She’s that because she’s sweet and she’s honest.

"I thought she’d do that and would have been disappointed if she didn’t. She's a work in progress."

Lyons was on target again in the following mile handicap as 13-8 favourite Pier Pressure got up by half a length under an inspired ride from 7lb claimer Nicola Burns, while Continuite formed the second leg of a double for Carroll after he won earlier on the Andy Oliver-trained Sierra De Gredos in the 7f handicap.

80-1 shock

There was a big turn up in the second division of the 1m1½f handicap as the Michael Byrne-trained Skib Gold powered three and a half lengths clear under Paddy Harnett at odds of 80-1.
