Aidan O'Brien colt cut for next year's 2,000 Guineas after impressing in Killarney race won previously by Anthony Van Dyck

Benvenuto Cellini delivered on market expectations at Killarney to build on a promising first outing for Aidan O’Brien.
The impeccably bred colt, a son of Frankel out of Chad Brown’s brilliant US miler Newspaperofrecord, finished second to stablemate Dorset at the Curragh on Irish Derby weekend and made no mistake on his second start, a performance that saw him cut by bookmakers for next year's Classics.
Sent off 2-5 favourite, he was sent to the lead from an early stage and never looked in danger under Wayne Lordan, who used the whip just once in the closing stages as he was largely pushed out to beat stablemate Endorsement in the mile maiden.
Lordan said: "He’s a horse that stepped forward and riding him around there in front he was having a good look. He got a little bit lonely in the last furlong and was half leaning off the rail, but he’s a very nice colt.
"I think mentally he’s going to improve, he’s just a little bit immature. He’s a nice colt for us as the year goes on."
Benvenuto Cellini was following a similar path to the stable’s 2019 Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck, who finished seventh in the same Curragh maiden - a race that has been the launchpad to so many O’Brien stars, including Australia, Gleneagles and City Of Troy – before winning this Killarney contest.
Lordan added to Racing TV: "He feels like a horse who is going to stay well. He was only doing his own thing out front but when I got after him he quickened and he’s going to stay, so that will bring a bit of class into him when he goes up in trip."
Paddy Power reacted by cutting Benvenuto Cellini into 25-1 (from 33) for next year’s 2,000 Guineas. He is the same price with William Hill for the Derby.
