Favourite backers beware: why the market could be all wrong for this year's Super Sprint

Graeme Rodway crunches the numbers on the Newbury feature

This is a unique race in the calendar because the conditions give allowances based on the auction price of each individual runner, with cheaper horses receiving the most weight. That means there are often a huge range of abilities on show and that is the case again this season.

The highest-rated BHA runner, Havana Hurricane, has a figure of 100, while the horse with the lowest rating, Corniche Girl, boasts a mark of just 63. That makes it a whopping 37lb between them in terms of pure ability, but Havana Hurricane concedes only 8lb in weight.

It’s this huge discrepancy between Havana Hurricane’s ability and his position in the weights that makes him such a warm order with the bookmakers. He is the class act and that has been the key in recent years, but he has yet to run in a Group race and that has also been important.
