Ascot is very different from Epsom - and that gives one candidate a clear edge in the King George

Harry Wilson analyses the Ascot feature

There is a sense of familiarity about the five runners in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is largely due to the fact there are no three-year-olds to consider in this all-age contest.

However, what this race may lack in intrigue is made up for in quality. The quintet have landed 12 Group 1s between them, with each runner successful at the highest level. Those victories have been achieved in Britain, France, Germany, America, Dubai and Hong Kong.

Two contenders, Jan Brueghel and Calandagan, have already reached or exceeded the ten-year average Racing Post Rating for a King George winner (126.1) They are meeting for the second time this season, having been separated by just half a length in the Coronation Cup at Epsom last month.
