'He has the ability to win most races' - can 'complicated character' put his best foot forward in Sunday Series handicap at Hamilton?

There are loads of regular visitors among the 15-runner line-up in this competitive sprint, but it's the two southern raiders who catch the eye most.

Harry Charlton will be saddling his first runner at Hamilton when Blue Day heads to post. The four-year-old had raced solely over six furlongs before winning comfortably on his first try at the minimum distance at Ascot in April, and he went close to making it 2-2 over the trip at Haydock last time, doing well to get within half a length of the winner having blown the start.

Those runs have come on good to firm but he also has form on soft ground, so he shouldn't mind if the forecast rain arrives, and he could have plenty more to offer.

The other who appeals is the Phil McEntee-trained Marching Mac, who took a big step forward from his reappearance to finish fourth in the Dash at Epsom last time, despite not being helped by his low draw and dwelling at the start.

He ran to a Racing Post Rating of 88, just 1lb shy of his career-best, and gets to run off a 2lb lower mark here. He was a five-time winner last year and is likely to go well now down in class.

Spring Is Sprung is bidding for the £100,000 bonus, having landed Sunday Series races at Newmarket and Chelmsford on his last two starts, but he has never won off a mark this high on turf, albeit Archie Young claims a useful 5lb.

Rain would also be a concern for Spring Is Sprung, unlike Albegone who looks the pick of Tim Easterby's trio. He is upped markedly in class after last month's Catterick win, but he bolted up by three lengths on his sole start over course and distance on soft ground and warrants respect back here.

Going update

The ground was good, good to soft in places on Saturday with the rain clearing on Sunday to sunny intervals when racing begins and temperatures reaching 17C.

What they say

Adam Ryan, assistant trainer to Kevin Ryan, trainer of Bergerac
He ran a cracking race to be runner-up at York last time, where he tends to run brilliantly. He's run well at this course before and has gone over the track and trip as well, and if he replicates his York form then he should be bang there.

Ruth Carr, trainer of Reigning Profit
He likes this track, but he was a bit below par at Newmarket last time for whatever reason. We've given him a bit of time to get over that and he seems in good form at home. If we did get any rain, it wouldn't be detrimental to him.

Katie Scott, trainer of Curious Rover
He's in really good form, but I'm not 100 per cent sure the track will be right for him. If it rains it'll be good for him and we could have a wet Saturday in Scotland, so we're hoping it comes. He's been a cracking, consistent horse who always gives us a run for our money, but he might be at the top end of his handicap mark.

Nicola Barron, joint-trainer of Zarzyni
He's absolutely fine and looks in good nick with himself. He has the ability to win most races but he has a habit of not doing so. He's such a complicated little character, so you never quite know what you're going to get.
