Can Sir Lowry's Pass book Royal Ascot ticket with Zetland Gold Cup win? Analysis and trainer quotes for Redcar feature

This is a cracking Zetland Gold Cup with a handful of highly progressive four-year-olds pitched against more exposed rivals.

The pick of that age group could be Sir Lowry’s Pass, who stormed two lengths clear of Tony Montana at Goodwood three weeks ago on just his second start since qualifying for handicaps. That looked a strongly contested race at the time and Tony Montana provided confirmation of that when beaten a head by Thunder Run at York next time out.

Ed Walker, trainer of Sir Lowry’s Pass, mentioned the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot as a possible target and this looks like the ideal stepping stone.

Both his running style and breeding suggest the Siyouni colt will improve for a step up to a mile and a half in due course, so Redcar’s galloping track and long straight should suit him.

See That Storm, a winner of his last four handicaps – three of them at Redcar – continues on the upgrade, but he might just lack the scope for further improvement unlike Sir Lowry’s Pass.

Approval, winner of a 1m2f handicap at Glorious Goodwood last summer, has more to offer this year and probably needed his reappearance run at Newmarket this month. He, too, has few miles on the clock and acts well on good to firm ground.

Ground and weather

The ground was described as good to firm, good in places on Sunday after 2mm of rain overnight. No further rain was expected before racing.

What they say

Martin Dixon of The Horse Watchers, owners of Penzance
He needs to bounce back from his run at Chester, but the ground was overwatered and he found it too loose. Prior to that he'd been in very good form. If they don't get too much more rain we'd like to think conditions and track will suit him well, and he's got a handy draw.

Ed Walker, trainer of Sir Lowry's Pass
I've always thought he was a nice horse and it was great to get him back on track with a win at Goodwood. He should progress from that and I hope he'll run well enough here to sneak into the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot.

Ed Bethell, trainer of See That Storm
He's in good form and has been training well since his last win at Redcar. We're under no illusions, it's a big step up in class, he's taking on very decent horses and he's got to improve again. We hope he can, but you never know until you try.

Adrian Keatley, trainer of Romieu
We were delighted with his win on his first run for us, then at York we rode him a bit wrong, we should have taken our time more with him in his first handicap. He still ran a big race and we hope he can get back to winning ways. Stepping up in trip should be no problem, although he doesn't have the greatest of draws.

John Quinn, joint-trainer of Liberty Coach
He ran a good race at Chester and has decent form at Redcar. He's in good nick and we're hoping for a big run.
