Tom Segal on why Ascot draw analysis is overblown - and the one simple golden rule he follows in every race

Tipster

Race analysts love the perfect winner. They love having done their ridiculous pace maps and they love having studied the draw to within an inch of its life.

It's like it gives them some sort of credibility when it comes to finding the winner of a big-field straight-track race at Ascot and they seem to think you're just guessing if you don't follow suit.

What they don't do is go back after a race and reflect on how wrong they were. This year all I've heard after the draw came out for Wednesday's Royal Hunt Cup, with My Cloud, The Liffey and Greek Order being drawn in three of the highest stalls, is that a high draw is a must.
