Merit over mediocrity: fierce debate over prize-money highlights a ludicrous disparity

The publication of Horse Racing Ireland's 2024 Factbook has sparked a row between Irish racing's administrative body and the Irish Racehorse Trainers Association.
In an introduction to the annual statistics, HRI's chief executive, Suzanne Eade, stresses that "prize-money remains a priority". However, HRI's commitment to this ambition has been questioned by IRTA chief executive Feidhlim Cunningham, who has examined the breakdown of the €3.8 million increase that has taken place since 2019.
During this period, HRI's contribution has reduced by €92,000 despite a growth in fixtures and an increase of €8.8m in government funding. The boost in prize-money is mainly due to increased owner contributions and commercial sponsorship, including an enhanced contribution from the Irish European Breeders' Fund.
