Dr Watson looked on disapprovingly as clouds of smoke rose from Sherlock Holmes’s pipe. The great detective’s latest investigation had resulted in an innocent man’s execution and Watson was concerned at his friend’s opium addiction.

“Well,” said Holmes, “he’d have murdered someone sooner or later.”

Watson knew from long experience not to argue with the great man. Prudently changing the subject, he remarked: “The Grand National is approaching again. People have not forgotten your encouragement for One For Arthur eight years ago.”
