Lorcan Williams looking to future as conditional jockey after title victory

Lorcan Williams shows his champion's style when winning on Unioniste at Wincanton in February

Lorcan Williams is, in his own words, "kicking on" after winning the amateur riders' championship in a nail-biting night at Stratford on Friday, with the ultimate aim of adding the conditional title to his trophy cabinet.

Williams, who turns 19 in September, is certainly not resting on his laurels, riding at Worcester on Monday and at Newton Abbot on Friday this week, as well as preparing for the course he needs to attend before turning conditional at the end of the month.

Williams, the latest to graduate through pony racing, where he had 70 winners starting aged nine, and point-to-points, thanked his boss Paul Nicholls and Rose Loxton for their support along with Sally Alner, who helped launch his amateur career with a dozen winners as a novice rider in points.

He revealed that his association with Nicholls came from winning an award at the renowned advanced pony racing camp run in Newmarket.

Williams said: "It was for a week's work experience with Paul and he said I was welcome to come back if I liked. It ended with getting a full-time job with him."

Williams told how he was on the edge of his seat at home watching the drama unfold at Stratford, winning the title by a solitary success over both Alex Edwards and Zac Baker, 12 winners to 11.

He said: "After Alex won to put him one behind and he was riding the favourite in the last I thought here we go, and I watched the race with one eye open and one eye shut!

"At the start of the season I never really set any target, but then the closer I got the more of a target it became."

Williams added: "My season started slowly but then I won on Garde Forestier for Charles Whittaker at Wincanton and then had a run on Virak, Captain Cattistock and Monsieur Gibraltar, before a quiet end to the season."
