Josh Moore is facing up to another injury nightmare after breaking his leg in a heavy fall at Haydock on Saturday.

The 30-year-old jockey, who missed more than three months of the season after sustaining a serious back injury in October, was awaiting an operation on Sunday morning at Aintree Hospital, having been taken there from the track by ambulance on Saturday evening.

Moore was riding Gleno for his father Gary in the veterans' chase when his mount fell at the sixth fence and landed on top of him.

Speaking on Sunday morning, Gary Moore said: "He's going down to have an operation on his leg this morning, all being well he's the third one to go down. My wife has been speaking to people with him and I don't know the full severity of the damage, but I know he's broken his femur.

"I think he's done some ribs and might have broken a vertebrae in his back and also got a punctured lung. When a horse lands on top of you it's definitely going to happen and if he didn't have bad luck, he'd have no luck."

Josh Moore actually partnered Gleno at Doncaster in late January on his first ride back from a fall at Plumpton in October that left him in hospital needing spinal surgery.

He was knocked unconscious and sustained injuries to his back and ribs and spent the next week in hospital, lying almost completely flat on his back, after being forced to miss having an operation on six consecutive days due to other medical emergencies.

Having eventually undergone a six-hour operation to have screws and rods inserted into his back after fracturing his T4 and T5 vertebrae, the rider described the injury as "the one injury I wouldn't want again" when speaking to the Racing Post in November.

Prior to injuring his spine, Moore suffered from concussion in 2021 and was forced to sit out much of the summer.

Gleno quickly got to his feet following the fall at Haydock and was reported to be fine after the race.
