Jamie Moore set for lengthy spell out after suffering a fracture at Fontwell

Champion Chase-winning rider Jamie Moore is set for a spell on the sidelines after hurting his back and sternum at Fontwell on Tuesday.

Moore was aboard Alka Step for John Bridger in a novice handicap chase when the nine-year-old blundered and unseated him five fences from home.

He was taken to hospital and on Wednesday was still waiting to learn the full extent of his injuries.

His younger brother Josh, also a jump jockey who had a winner on Fontwell's card, said: "He's injured his sternum and I think he's fractured the T5 vertebrae in his back, but he's waiting for an MRI scan.

"He was meant to have one this morning and hasn't had it yet. He's in Brighton Hospital and he's all right, but he's just waiting to see if anything needs doing to those injuries."

A popular and experienced member of the weighing room, Arsenal fan Moore enjoyed the finest hour of his career when triumphing in the 2014 Champion Chase on Sire De Grugy, who was trained by his father Gary at the family's base in West Sussex.

His best season in terms of winners came with 75 in 2007-08, but the exploits of Sire De Grugy meant 2013-14 was Moore's most lucrative with £1,030,321 won in prize-money.

He was heartbreakingly denied another Cheltenham Festival success in March when Goshen was well clear and firmly in command in the Triumph Hurdle only to fluff the last and unseat the 35-year-old, who was left in tears.
